We would like to invite you, your staff and families who have children with special needs to a FREE sensory friendly showing of the IMAX film, Superpower Dogs. This free screening is sponsored by the Naval Medical Center San Diego, and two non-profit organizations, Puppy Prodigies and Pawsitive Teams. We work with our local San Diego and Camp Pendleton Exceptional Family Member Programs. Since we will be in the DC area in a couple weeks, we’re extending an invitation to your program as well.
One of our dogs, Ricochet stars in the film with a Marine Veteran. Ricochet is a certified therapy dog, and has been working with children who have autism or other special needs, as well as military with PTSD for the last 10 years. Her story is told through her co-stars, a Marine veteran with PTSD, and the mother of a seven year old boy with special needs. Ricochet is also available to interact with the kids before, during and after the movie. The other four dogs in the film include Henry, an avalanche rescue dog, Reef, a water rescue dog, Halo, a search and rescue dog and Tipper/Tony who sniff out poachers in South Africa.
For families of children with autism, other special needs or disabilities, going to the movies can be challenging. The blaring sound and contrast of bright lights in a pitch-black theater can be overstimulating. In addition, the immersive/3D formats of some movies can be overwhelming. Children on the autism spectrum can have anxiety producing reactions to the darkness, or the volume may be too much to bear. It can be difficult for a child to remain quiet and sit still for a movie.
We understand the difficulties and barriers that individuals and families of children with disabilities experience. As such, we strive to help them relax and enjoy the movie without worrying if someone will be disturbed by the noise or movement and complain.
Our sensory friendly screenings give families an opportunity to enjoy a movie with their loved ones. Kids are welcome to talk, get up, dance, walk around, shout, sing or partake in any other behavior. We encourage kids to express themselves in their own way!
These showings provide an adaptive movie experience, with lowered sound, dim lights, no previews and a 2D format where glasses aren’t required. The environment is safe, comfortable, accepting, non-judgmental and understanding. Fidgets and other comfort items are also permitted.
