I Have Needs Too! (Fairfax)

Having a child with special needs affects every member of the family. Neurotypical siblings of children with special needs face a unique set of challenges including jealousy over less parental time, confusion about differing rules and expectations, and a sense of pressure to compensate for their sibling. This workshop will provide strategies for managing the mixed emotions and increased responsibilities of siblings of children with special needs. Specific issues facing foster, adoptive and kinship families will be addressed.

Melanie Kantor is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and the owner of Emerge Therapy, LLC. With a background in special education, she has worked with hundreds of kids, teens, young adults and families of neurodiverse children. She uses a mixture of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, yoga, mindfulness, and art to help clients manage anxiety, depression and life transitions.

Formed Families Forward is a non-profit organization operating a resource center for foster, kinship and adoptive families in the Northern Virginia area. Open to all parents, caregivers, and professionals, though content will addresss issues of particular relevance to foster, adoptive and kinship families.
